Wait! Has it been 13 years since Bad Santa was released?! Get out of town! Next you are going to tell me it has been 13 years too since ELF was released? What?! It has been. Wow. Sadly, no ELF 2 this holiday season. Maybe next year but we do get Bad Santa 2, the only holiday movies where you feel guilty for enjoying the depravity in humanity.
“In the first movie it’s all about anti-consumerism and the corporatization of Christmas. Willie’s that reluctant hero drawn to do the right thing,” explains Producer Gunn. “We got into this one and as soon as I read the script it was the same kind of feelings. There’s this clear theme, which is that your family doesn’t necessarily have to be the people that you share DNA with. Your family is who you make it and, as Billy said, your family is who’s in your heart.”
Bad Santa 2 takes the dynamic duo of Willie Soke and Marcus to Chicago, played by Billy Bob Thornton and Tony Cox, to rip off a charity run by the ravishing redhead Christina Hendricks. The chubby little kid Thurman Merman (played by Brett Kelly) from Bad Santa is back and Kathy Bates joins the cast as Willie’s mom Sunny Soke, who lowers the criminal behavior of Willie and Marcus. As you may recall from the first Bad Santa, there are more “F” bombs dropped during the movie than you would hear at a Jay-Z concert. There are more sexual acts than most of you have enjoyed since Obama came into office. “I have a lot of outdoor sex,” says Hendricks.
The movie’s climax and major chase scene takes place during SantaCon, an annual event that involves people dressing like Santa and going on a massive, drunken bar crawl. What started as a small event has grown, and now fills Chicago city streets with hundreds of blind-drunk Santas once a year. In short, it doesn’t get any more ‘Bad Santa’ than SantaCon. In many ways, Bad Santa 2 is a lot like Kandy. Bad Santa is the perfect mix of the salty with the sweet and Kandy is the perfect mix of sexy with sweet.
