What is it with Kandy and Aussies? We cannot seem to get enough of them. Wherever we turn there is another Aussie captivating us with her beauty. First there was Yvonne Strahovski who starred in the television show Chuck. We’re still holding out hope that one day she will grace the pages of our magazine. Next up was Emily Sears who has graced three Kandy covers and currently has a Carls Jr. / Hardees commercial airing here in the States. And finally Margot Robbie who is our latest obsession. Fans of Margot know her work very well, “The Wolf of Wall Street”, “Focus”, “The Big Short”, “Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot”, and “The Legend of Tarzan”. If we had a Hot 100 or World’s Sexiest Female, she would be at the top of the list. Will she be the next Aussie to appear on the cover of Kandy? We can only dream.
Robbie is everywhere this year and no more prevalent than in the latest comic book adaptation onto the big screen, Suicide Squad. In the film, Margot plays the role of Harley Quinn, a favorite cosplay of a many Kandy girls.
Robbie’s character Harley is attracted to the Joker, played by Academy Award winner Jared Leto. Harley’s love for her boyfriend initially troubled Margot Robbie, who was tasked with bringing the harlequin to life. “Why does she love this guy?” the actress asks. “It was one of the things I really struggled to crack with this character. She’s so strong and smart and such a badass, she’s just awesome, but then she falls to pieces over this guy all the time. It’s something I didn’t like about her because I didn’t understand it at first. So, because she’s a psychiatrist, I decided to do research into the concept of co-dependence. I was taken by the idea that people could really live their life for one person. And it turns out it’s not really about the person, it’s a compulsion like alcohol or drug addiction. Once I thought of her relationship with Joker in those terms, as an addiction, I had a world of empathy for her.”
Robbie, whose scenes with the Joker were her most intimate, found her co-star’s interpretation both energizing and unnerving. “Jared and I didn’t really do any rehearsals,” she relates, “so when we got in front of the camera those scenes were just electric because those characters are so unpredictable.”
Despite critic reviews we say the opportunity to see Margot Robbie on the big screen as Harley Quinn is worth the price of admission. Besides we have to support anyone who appears on Conan during Comic-Con sucking on a candy lollipop. Sold!
